About Matt Wilson
A native of Toronto, Ontario and a graduate of Long Island University, Matt is the PGA Director of Instruction at La Rinconada Country Club in Los Gatos, CA.
Matt has coached countless players to personal-best performances and has helped hundreds of families to successfully navigate the complicated waters of competitive junior golf. Matt has worked with players at all levels of development, but the majority of his work has been focused on supporting competitive junior players looking to bring their games to the highest levels. Over the years, many athletes have gone on to experience success at the State/Provincial, National, AJGA, and NCAA levels. For his outstanding work with junior golfers, Matt was named to the US Kids Golf Top 50 Kids Teachers List in 2014.
Prior to arriving in California, Matt worked closely with Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher and former Golf Canada National Men’s Coach, Henry Brunton, in operating his private academy in Toronto. During that time, Matt lead all aspects of Strive for Excellence (a comprehensive, year-round coaching and training program for aspiring high-performance juniors ages 13-18) and New Competitive Golfer (a specialized coaching and training program for young golfers ages 8-13 who are learning to play the game and are new to competition).
Matt’s coaching strength lies particularly in his ability to communicate with young athletes and to align their aspirations with a clear and focused game plan for skill development.
An avid student of the game, Matt is very interested in the fields of Motor Learning, Kinesiology, and Sport Psychology, and how they pertain to learning and playing golf. In addition to self-directed research, Matt holds advanced certifications in coaching from the Coaching Association of Canada, Sport Canada, as well as the Titleist Performance Institute, and is one of only a select number of professionals in North America to attain ‘Master’ status from TrackMan University and the Certified Golf Coaches Association. Matt has also benefitted from observing and learning from some of the games top coaches, specifically, Cameron McCormick and James Sieckmann.
As a student-athlete at LIU, Matt was the Captain of the Men’s Golf Team, was an All-Northeast Conference First Team Selection, LIU Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and was named to ESPN: The Magazine’s All-Academic Team.
