David Orr is one of the leading putting coaches in the world (students include Justin Rose, Hunter Mahan, etc) and has a lot of wisdom to share as a life long teacher and someone who has thought a lot about what it takes to really really help people grow.
David shares his experiences as a junior golfer and how he became a scratch golfer with very little instruction. It’s amazing to see the importance of the environment he came up in and how much that pushed him to become better and better.
He shares his first experiences with teaching and how at first he fell in love with technique and style (you’ll hear how this has changed later on in the conversation with David).
Surround yourself with great people. One thing that is apparent is how important the people David surrounded himself have had on his growth and evolution as a coach.
As a coach you always have to be studying and learning. David shares how much time he spends learning and how he’s crafted his entire environment to allow him to spend as much time possible thinking and learning.
Here are David Orr’s top 3 things to start studying:
#1 ANATOMY – We’re dealing with the body so understanding anatomy and how the body works is critical
#2 MOTOR LEARNING – Study how students learn and acquire skills.
#3 BUSINESS / MARKETING – Learn the business and marketing side of being a coach in the real world.
Although experience is extremely valuable… It’s a combination of education + experience that can really help instructors excell and become more effective working with students.
Excellence and Perfectionism:
There is variability is everything… You have to balance the fine line between excellence and perfectionism.
There are core principle to everything but the beauty lies in the adaptability. There is no love in perfectionism and ultimates leads to poor results.
David shares how 3d has shown that you can’t repeat a swing or even how you set up 2 times in a row. There has to be adaptability from variability in everything.
There is no love in perfectionism
You can be in 3 places – Growth, Stagnant, or Decay.
Where do you want to be?
